20. Vila Inginer I. Catuniari

Engineer I. Catuniari Villa
1920’ Strada Washington 30

Presently undergoing a restoration process, the villa at number 30 on Washington Street is an exercise of Neo-Romanian architecture, which stands out due to the apparent masonry arches and frieze.  The morfological elements that define this building, like the corner with three column arches on one side and one on  the other, the powerful corner buttresses on the groundfloor, the terrace on the first floor and others, can be found within other works of the architect, but the texture contrast (rendering vs. masonry) is an experiment for Virginia ANDREESCU HARET. Out of the works that we have identified in Bucharest, she only used apparent masonry on the facades of the Dimitrie Cantemir High School.
In order to moderate the composition of the facades, the architect did not use the ornate capital that we can see at the STĂNESCU and LUPU villas, but she used Doric capitals, although of Neo-Romanian proportions.
As with many of the architects’ creations, here to is interesting to follow the study of facade proportions, for example the Golden Ratio first floor windows, their parapets within the same ratio and others.
